Backstory: oli menny, olin just lähteny
For things that had already happened before your story's main event, use oli + participle: bussi oli jo menny = the bus had already gone. Spoken forms shorten as usual (mennyt → menny), and the we-form is 'me oltiin' + participle: me oltiin just päästy kotiin.
Mä olin just lähteny, ku se soitti. = I had just left when they called.
Se oli unohtanu avaimet himaan. = They had forgotten their keys at home.
Kävi ilmi, et se oli tienny kaiken. = It turned out they had known everything.
